In this video I read of the definition of alcohol dependence which is the root of alcoholism as written by the American Psychiatric Association Diagnostic and Statistical Manual IV. I go from inside the mind of a drinker using myself as an example to critique each of the points that are listed. In order to be diagnosed with alcoholism or alcohol dependence you need to match 3 of 7 criteria. These points include an marked increase of alcohol use, classic withdrawal symptoms, higher use of alcohol then was intended, and inability to cut down on drinking, great deal of time spent on obtaining alcohol, important activities are reduced for alcohol use and alcohol use is continued despite persistent physical or psychological problems.I show for each point how it may or may not be applicable and therefore the definition is flimsy and leaving alcoholism as undefined and void.
