IS THIS SCHIZOPHRENIA OR…?
Question by -±яǺvΐѕ-: IS THIS SCHIZOPHRENIA OR…?
My sister had just been released from prison after serving for almost a year. She has a history of going into and out of prison since she was about 15. She had problems with abusing drugs, both illegal and pharmaceutical, but she is clean now.
She’s 20 now and she started exhibiting some VERY odd/disturbing behaviors. I know that most of you are going to simply say “Get her help” Which my mother is already doing, but I wanted to know if anyone out there knows what is going on, or has seen this type of behavior before.
She has violent mood swings, and starts swearing and gets very agitated for no reason. She talks about people by name that none of her friends or family have ever met, and tonight was the strangest of all. She woke up, came downstairs and smeared a Little Debbie snack cake all over the counter, and it looks like she ate some of it, but tried rubbing the rest into the counter with a spoon.
It’s very sad to see her this way, and I know that when she was locked up, she spent a great deal of time in solitary confinement… could this be a contributing factor to her erratic behavior? Please, any information/advice is welcomed. This is such a difficult thing to deal with.
To: Sparkles, No, she’s definitely not just doing it out of frustration, she doesn’t seem to realize that what she is doing is strange. It’s like she’s almost unaware of her actions even when they are brought to her attention. It’s one of the oddest situations I’ve ever dealt with.
And as far as the mood swings are concerned, it seems that they change from moment to moment. When I talk to her, she processes and responds what I’m saying, but then sometimes she just does things that make absolutely no sense… like dumping her drink on the floor and rubbing into the carpet… etc.
It’s scary to realize that our personalities are so fragile. She wasn’t like this before she went to prison.
To Earthmother: It’s very unlikely that she can be using drugs again. She is not allowed to leave my mother’s house, [court order] or to have anyone over. She’s under constant supervision and she didn’t live here before she went to prison, so it’s highly unlikely that she had anything stashed/hidden.
Perhaps I’m not making the situation clear enough. She is acting strangely and doesn’t realize she’s doing it, even while she is doing it. When my mom asks her why she is acting the way she is, she either laughs or gets verbally abusive, but I honestly don’t think she even understands why.
When I spoke of her rubbing the snack cake on the counter, I don’t just mean in one spot. I mean- it’s all over the place. And she has been repeating this type of thing for several days now.
My mother cooked dinner the other day, and instead of eating it, she just rubbed it into her hands like it was lotion. She has NEVER done things like that until she got out of prison. I know that for a FACT.

That, or Bi-Polar. Schizo is so broad. There’s Schizophrenia, Schizo-affective, schizo-non affective. So many options. Glad that your mother is getting her help. But if she’s doing this out of anger, try to help her with some coping skills. Walking, exercising, writing, things that “let out”
