Flickr member A.k.i.b.a. makes the important observation that the seated man on the left is using a WATER PIPE, which means he is smoking tobacco. Only the reclining man on the RIGHT is smoking opium, and is holding his pipe over a low oil lamp made especially for opium smokers. Thanks for making this clear, A.k.i.b.a. !
"…..In the past, smokers would utilize a specially designed opium pipe which had a removable knob-like pipe-bowl of fired earthenware attached by a metal fitting to a long, cylindrical stem. A small "pill" of opium about the size of a pea would be placed on the pipe-bowl, which was then heated by holding it over an opium lamp, a special oil lamp with a distinct funnel-like chimney to channel heat into a small area. The smoker would lie on his or her side in order to guide the pipe-bowl and the tiny pill of opium over the stream of heat rising from the chimney of the oil lamp and inhale the vaporized opium fumes as needed. Several pills of opium were smoked at a single session depending on the smoker’s tolerance to the drug. The effects could last up to twelve hours……"
The man lying on the floor got totally wasted while the photographer was setting up and taking these photos. After this, the seated guy went away, and the main junkie rolled to the wall and passed out…where the photographer too another picture of him…here : www.flickr.com/photos/24443965@N08/3490797988/
Before there were the OPIUM WARS of the 19th Century, China was was the recipient of illegally imported OPIUM to the tune of 900 tons a year. No matter how much the Chinese Government (located in the North) tried to stop it with laws and decrees, it just kept pouring in through the south…mainly smuggled in by the BRITISH. This led to war, which the British won, after which Opium became the life of the party for an entire nation.
