I would say that what usually causes the abuse is some depression or trauma in your life. Most people I have known who abused drugs had difficult childhoods with emotional or physical abuse or neglect (or even sexual) and they are trying to escape that by being in an altered state of mind.

Most people who abuse drugs have trouble or are unable to keep a job. Sometimes they wind up on the streets, homeless. They are often fixated on the drug and sometimes end up in rehab. Other areas of their lives are affected; they are messy, disorganized and have trouble thinking reasonably or coherently.
