New Chemo Drug Specifically for Metastatic Breast Cancer?

Question by Yvonne: New chemo drug specifically for metastatic breast cancer?
My mom was diagnosed for the 6th time last week. After both breasts (almost 10 years apart), lungs, bones, and liver they found it in her colon. She has been on Herceptin every week for a while now, probably almost 5 years. She will start a new chemo that includes an IV drip 1 week on / 3 weeks off and a chemo pill 2 times a day. She said it’s a brand new medication specifically for metastatic breast cancer. I can’t remember the name of it so I was wondering if anyone here knows what it might be and if there are any statistics on how well it works.
I know I’ve asked alot of questions about this but we’ve been fighting this for over 10 years now. I’ve never heard of anyone living through 6 cancer diagnoses and working full time through it all so I’m not giving up.
Thanks for any advice!

Guessing at this helps no one. You need to talk to her doctor he or she will have all the information on the average response and remission time based on the kind of cancer she has, the grade, the hormone receptor status and her previous treatment as it pertains your mother. This is what you really want to know and we cannot answer.

The oncologist should be able to give you information on how many people with her stage of cancer survive after 5 years per 100 who take the med, vs the 100 people who have that stage of cancer but don’t take the med. That is called the prognosis.
It doesn’t sound like the cancer is ready to give up. I would try an organic vegan (total vegetarian) diet or macrobiotic diet with distilled water to drink. No artificial additives or preservatives. No working with chemicals or chemical cleaners or sprays (as best you can). But that is radical and no guarantees with that either. It would just help reduce the toxin load. Getting her weight down might help reduce estrogen levels stored in fat cells, if she is overweight. She could also try Cancer Treatment Centers of America and/or http://www.clinicaltrials.gov and search under her type of cancer for clinical trials. Hit the map tab to find local trials in your area.
I am a breast cancer survivor myself. I don’t know that there is such a thing as a survivor really, as just someone who survived and managed to live through it all. I don’t think chemo is the whole answer. Chemo sometimes only helps one or two more people out of 100 vs the 100 who don’t take it with the same stage and type of cancer. And it can cost upwards of $ 15,000 while making your hair fall out and causing lost wages, nausea, vomiting and financial problems. There HAS to be more of a better solution to breast cancer than the current “solutions”. I am not saying one way is “better” than the other way, but there are alternative treatments possible.
