In Handbook of Substance Abuse, authors Tarter, Ammerman & Ott add “Also noteworthy is evidence that amphetamine facilitates glutamate release and in neostriatal tissue an increase in extra-cellular glutamate triggers the release of ascorbate, an antioxidant vitamin and neuromodulator (Rebec & Pierce, 1994). It appears that glutamate transporter, activated by glutamate release, causes ascorbate release by a heteroexchange mechanism ( Fillenz, 1995). This process has important indications for amphetamine because the extra-cellular level of neostriatal ascorbate exerts a strong influence on the behavioral response to this drug. High extra cellular levels of ascorbate, induced by either systematic administration of high doses or direct intraneostriatal infusions, antagonizes amphetamine-induced motor activity (Tolbert, Thomas, Middaugh & Zemp, 1979; L. K. White, Maurer, Kraft, Oh & Rebec, 1990)…”
