What Nomenclature to Memorize Before Beginning a Summer of Organic Chemistry?
Question by Phoenix: What nomenclature to memorize before beginning a summer of organic chemistry?
Long story short, I am taking organic chemistry over this summer (starts in less then a month). I want to memorize a few things before beginning class, some standard things like nomenclature. What nomenclature should I focus on? Also, perhaps you have any useful suggestions with regard to what to go over before beginning organic chemistry. Thank You.

Firstly it is very good to know that you are interested in organic chemistry nomenclature..
Secondly,i am a guy of INDIAN origin,so maybe your nomenclature is a bit different,but i guess you’ll work it out..:)
Lets begin with the basics-
NOTE:-this is totally IUPAC naming system.
1.ALKANE
these are basic hydrocarbons with all single covalent bonds-
1.1-methane (CH4)
1.2-ethane (C2H6)
1.3-propane (C3H8)
1.4-butane (C4H10)
1.5-pentane (C5H12)
1.6-hexane (C6H14)
1.7-heptane (C7H16)
and so on…
2.ALKENE
these are next set of hydrocarbons with atleast one double covalent bonds-
2.1-ethene (C2H4)
2.2-propene (C3H6)
2.3-butene (C4H8)
2.4-pentene (C5H10)
2.5-hexene (C6H12)
2.6-heptene (C7H14)
and so on
3.ALKYNE
these are next set of hydrocarbons with at least one triple covalent bonds-
3.1-ethyne (C2H2)
3.2-propyne (C3H4)
3.3-butyne (C4H6)
3.4-pentyne (C5H8)
3.5-hexyne (C6H10)
3.6-heptyne (C7H12)
and so on
NOTE:-each successive member differs from the previous 1 by CH2…
now if ya replace one H atom by the following groups you get
ATOM NAME
-x halide
-OH alcohol
-COOH acid
-COH aldehyde
-CO- ketone
i guess this should suffice ur basics..:)
