A friend of mine was ticketed for “Minor in possession of Alcohol” a while ago in the state of California and is due in court soon. She received the ticket while on a road trip, so she has to travel the 2.5 hours to the place where she was ticketed. She is very worried about losing her license, as she has to get back and forth to work and will be attending college again in the fall.

She is 20 years old now – and received the ticket when she was over the age of 18. Is she guaranteed to get her license suspended? Is there anything she can do to ensure that she doesn’t lose her license?

A one-year license suspension is mandatory upon conviction of MIP in California.

Your “friend” should speak with an attorney, who may be able to set up a diversion program in lieu of a conviction.
