How to Cope With Being the Cause of a Dear Friends Suicide?
Question by Maddie: How to cope with being the cause of a dear friends suicide?
–She’s fourteen, but she nevers speds any of her money on clothes or makeup; she’s a middle class family but all her shirts are from museums or volunteer organizations, and all her pants are clearance-rack yoga pants. The only shoes she wears are These brown shoes she calls her “safari shoes”. And she never, ever wears makeup. She really hates it.
-She seems to have a real connection with animals. She actually talks to them; not baby talk or anything, but like they’d really talk back.
-She’s fourteen and has only ever heard of J-14. All her walls are covered with posters from her huge collection of National Geographics.
-While most teenage girls want to be an actress at our school, she wants to be a traveller/zoologist.
-At our school, going wih the flow is the cool thing; she’s totally cool with sharing her own opinion, which I always opposite the populars girls’.
-She loves science and homework.
-Instead of sleeping in, she volunteers a lot on weekends.
-She’s not shy about living her family and siblings.
She gets bullied a lot, with people calling her a “nerd” or “weirdo”, etc., and a while ago one of the popular girls came up to me said that
I could be popular if I “broke up” with her in front of the whole eighth grade, and thinking she would understand, I embarrassed her by yelling at her for being a physco and poured milk on her favorite “Save the Ocean” T-shirts. She turned red and her eyes got watery, but she just said, “I’d say “see you when I’m your boss, but I’m not planning on working at a meth house.”
Now I’ve stopped seeing her outside. She is less outspoken, and I saw her doing homework in the bathroom (where she has to eat lunch now), rather than come to school with it done (like she used to).
I had all that typed out yesterday. Today, I was pulled out of class an given a letter by a teary eyed counselor. My friend committed suicide. My letter just said, “why?” I was her only friend, so I feel bad, but how do I cope?

write her a letter. It sounds stupid, and like it won’t help, but after you start writing it, you will really open up and pour your heart out. Once you’ve written it, try to imagine her response, good or bad. I promise it will comfort you to know that no matter what happens after you die, she might know exactly how you feel. I’m not religious or anything, but when my friend tried to kill himself and it looked like he wasn’t going to make it, I wrote him one. I felt like he understood and hopefully you will too.
