Where in the Constitution Is the Government Given the Authority to Protect Us Against Ourselves?

Question by Josh Mullin: Where in the constitution is the Government given the authority to protect us against ourselves?
I personally do not agree on this drug war. It has cost us over 1 trillion dollars in debt overall and has done nothing to thwart drug users. There is no evidence that controlling a substance will in any way cause less people to use it.

This is simply my opinion though, I think all drugs harmless or not should be legal, that American’s should have the choice to do what they want with themselves. But Im also open to other opinions. If you can make an opposing argument with good points then please do, or if you agree with my point of view please tell why. Thanks.

Your points are similar to those of Dr. Thomas Szasz in his essay entitled, “The Ethics of Addiction”, published about 40 to 45 years ago. It provides the scientific support for your thesis.
