I’ve heard that ecstasy can cause false positives for amphetamines, false positives for meth, and false positives for both. Which of these is correct?

“Most commercial amphetamine immunoassay screening tests cross-react significantly with MDMA or its major metabolites…” – not a surprise, since it is in the amphetamine class, and so is meth, actually. It isn’t totally a false positive since these are closely related. A different sort of test can be used to distinguish between these drugs. Ecstasy is detected in urine tests.

“MDMA is not tested specifically for in the standard urine drug tests. However, MDMA users do test positive for amphetamines (the two drugs are chemically similar). Also, many tablets of street ecstasy are not pure MDMA and frequently include amphetamines or ephedrine, which will show up in a test. MDMA is usually detectable in urine for 24-72 hours after use.”
