The junior resident tells his department head but was given instructions to keep this incident to himself. If you are the junior resident, what would you do?

Case 3

In the Internal Medicine clinic, you were assigned to handle a 45 year old man with chronic liver disease, known to have a very bad temper. He constantly argues with the nursing staff while in the reception area of the clinic, and when you examine him, he would always have very rude comments to you, saying things like “Do you know what you are doing?” “Are you a real doctor?” What would be the best course of action?

Best answer:

Answer by smile and don’t stop
1. Patient Confidentiality – tell the spouse that the patient has asked for confidentiality and that you are not legally allowed to give out information against the patients wishes.

2. I would not do anything. What should I do? Tell someone else. Especially if they are in danger of causing harm to the patients.

3. Ignore him. It will be hard, but getting in an argument with a patient is not an option.
