DATELAND – Two women are in custody after the biggest meth bust in the history of the U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint in the Yuma sector.

Two women are in custody for trying to smuggle 47 pounds, worth over $ 1 million, of methamphetamine through a Border Patrol checkpoint on Interstate 8 eastbound near Dateland.

The women approached the checkpoint at about 2 p.m. on Saturday in a 2002 Isuzu Trooper. A canine team reportedly alerted to the back of the SUV which means there may be contraband.

During a secondary inspection of the vehicle agents discovered a hidden compartment above the gas tank. Inside that compartment there were 37 small packages of meth weighing just under 47 pounds worth approximately $ 1,125,600.

The drugs and SUV were seized and the driver and passenger were taken into custody.
