I believe one earns more in the US for counseling because we do not have socialized medicine here – which means the education of the counselors is better – and they give better help but also charge more.

Psychologists charge quite a bit for their services for several reasons:
1) There is a massive amount of training that goes into their education
2) Their education costs a TON

HOWEVER: There are many thousands of unemployed psychologists.

Simply becoming a Ph.D. or psychologist is NO guarantee you’ll make a lot of money for several reasons:

1) You need to build up a client base – where are you going to get clients? You need them referred to you initially which means you need to be “in” with those who are “in the know” or have access to them.
2) Many people think they’ll make good shrinks but they really aren’t that good and patients get turned off to them and leave the counselor out of business

A good website for finding info on careers is www.apa.org

You can make some good money at a university – however – this depends on your expertise, and your experience and your specialty.

Simply being a “counselor” won’t really qualify you to be an instructor.

My specialty? Psychosocial addiction prevention and causes.

I used to be a police officer and grew up in an environment where these were present and am applying my law enforcement experience and perspectives to the legal aspects of saving the government and education systems money in preventing criminal behavior stemming from psychosocial addictions.
