What Do You Do to Prevent Theft of Your Horses/tack?

I’ve recently moved to a very, VERY rural area (no streetlights, no neighbors within 1/2 of a mile, etc.) and I found out one of my neighbors is a methamphetamine addict whose horses are all starving and regularly run loose down the roads, and my other neighbor, I’ve been told, used to sleep in my house and barn before I’d moved in! (They also found a human skull underneath his trailer, but couldn’t pin it on him.)

Egh. Yeah, so I’m very uncomfortable here, especially at night. My fences here are nothing special– just 4 strands of hot tape. I’ve been locking my gates but it’s not exactly hard to cut wire to get the horses and smash windows to get into the barn.

I do have two large dogs, a Doberman (who actually attacked the meth head’s son; I found out later he’d been loitering around my property when I wasn’t home), and a Great Pyrenees, but I’m still really paranoid.

What would you suggest? I can’t move, obviously, but what are some countermeasures I can take to prevent the theft of my horses and tack? Thanks. 🙂
I have tried several times since I’ve moved here, but nepotism is the rule in this county. She knows the chief of police and about all of the officers. And she killed a man– everyone knows it, and she even ADMITTED IT TO ME. Jeez, I’m surrounded by a bunch of crazy people. DX
