As of 2005, Greater Vancouver had the second-highest crime rate among major Canadian cities; second only to Winnipeg. Vancouver’s property-crime rate (partially a consequence of drug addiction centred in the Downtown Eastside) is particularly high; ranking among the highest rates of property crime for major cities in all of North America. One of the most common property crimes in the Vancouver area is automobile break-in; thus visitors are advised to conceal all items left in their car, and to use auto-theft protection devices. Some have criticized the justice system for being too lax on sentencing of criminal offenders.
