For many of us the dream of owning our own business has been a roller coaster ride of both successful and failed attempts. Often latching on to an idea of immediate success or riches, just because it looks good on paper (or on an internet sales page), has too many times cost us valuable time and resources. Success does have it’s price and that price is failure! For it’s often been said that “one who has yet to succeed has yet to fail”.

I have had my fair share of success stories over the years, as well as a few that were not so successful. Over the years, I have owned businesses that were very profitable and easy to manage and others that wouldn’t turn a profit if it were the only business on the planet. During the past few years, I have been involved with a cleaning business that has been extremely successful. Part of the reason for this success is the nature of the business, which in turn demands a very high service or bill rate.

The business I’m referring to is Crime Scene Cleanup. Although not your typical janitorial or cleaning business, most states classify it as such. Thus, if your state does not require any special licensing or training for its janitorial industry, none is required for the crime scene cleanup industry.

Crime scene cleanup is a niche business offering a service to a niche market. Only a select few people every need the services offered by a crime scene cleanup business and only a few such businesses service this group. However, since death and accidents involving blood and bodily fluids occur on a daily basis in every city around the world, it’s a market worth exploring.

Crime scene cleanup companies employ crime scene cleanup technicians. Most technicians have completed either an at home study course or a week long course at a training facility. Although not required by law or by most states, proper training is certainly an important consideration that shouldn’t be overlooked.

Crime scene cleanup technicians respond to crime and trauma scenes after the scene has been released by an investigating detective. Typcially, the body or injured person has been removed long before the technicians arrive on scene. Once on scene, the technicians will don personal protective equipment that acts as a barrier and prevents contact with and contamination from biohazards that may be present.

Crime scene cleanup companies are called upon to remove biohazards from a variety of different scenes and locations. Some of these may include:

Accidents involving blood and bodily fluids
Homicides
Suicides
Unattended deaths
Decompositions
Hoarding scenes
Gross filth residences
Meth labs
Vehicle accidents
Animal Feces
Bird droppings

A typical scene will take approximately four to six hours to clean. Two technicians at a minimum are sent to each scene, one to act as a dirty tech and the other as a clean tech. Crime scene cleanup technicians typically make between $23 and $40 per hour. The bill rate, depending on the location, will average between $150 and $400 per hour.
