How Often Do People Who Were Sexually Abused Abuse Others?

Question by Trace: How often do people who were sexually abused abuse others?
My ex boyfriend was molested by his dad for several years starting at an age that he was old enough to remember. He was forced to perform acts with a younger female family member. He never received any counseling or therapy for this and as far as I’m aware his family preferred to pretend it never happened. He acted out with self mutilation, a couple suicide attempts and abused drugs from the time he was 16-25. I always worried that if we ever had kids he would repeat the cycle of abuse but he never showed any signs that he was a child molester (if there even are signs to look for.) We broke up a year ago & I tried getting in contact with him to see how he’s doing, and his family informed me that he is serving 6 years in prison for abusing his niece.
How often do the molested become molesters themselves?
Does therapy even help to prevent that from happening?

Most kids who are molested do NOT go on to molest others. Therapy does help and it can still help him.
