How Do I Become an Addict Counselor?

Question by Tilly: How do I become an addict counselor?
I want to do drug/alcohol abuse counseling for my career and I was wondering what kind of degrees and such I will need to get there.
I only graduate from high school next year, so I want to know just what I need to get started on to be on my way.

And the job itself means more than any aspect of it to me, but if anyone knows how much it pays that would be helpful too.

Thanks!

Start with a B.S. in psychology, sometimes you can find certain emphases like “counseling” or things of the sort. A really important thing to look for during college is internship opportunities during your sophomore year. Luckily, I don’t think you’ll have a hard time finding some kind of internship or volunteer work with this field. You can ask to work at or attend AA meetings or other things similar to that.

good luck!
