MDMA, in and of itself, is not an addictive drug. The strong euphoric effects can be desirable, but your brain won’t crave it like nicotine or heroin. Essentially MDMA just forces the brain to release all of its neurotransmitters that induce happiness: Dopamine and Serotonin. The only real negative effect from the drug is a minor case of depression for the next day as the brain works to “refill” its store of those chemicals. While these effects are all well and good, this is only true of pure MDMA, which you would be hard pressed to find being circulated around by common drug dealers.
So what your friends need to be aware of is that ecstasy is almost always cut and pressed with other drugs: cocaine, methamphetamines, heroin, etc. This is where the addiction and negative health effects can begin to occur and depending on who is distributing the pills, this information can be hard to find out. There are testing materials out there for the recreational user, but you would have to hunt them down.
My suggestion: just tell them to slow down. Most indulgences in life are okay if done in moderation.
