Question by Sad and Single: Does our society need a rite of passage ?
In many societies, a male member has to go out and kill a wild animal before he’s allowed to call himself a man . His tribe has to know that he’ll be able to feed himself and his family . I’ve read where our society doesn’t have a rite of passage, and I’ve heard people say “It’s too bad our society doesn’t have a rite of passage !” . Does our society really need a rite of passage ? What kind of a rite of passage could our society have ? Why can’t our society’s rite of passage be graduating high school or going to college ? That’s as close as we’ve been able to come for the last few decades . Why do we need anything else ? If our society had a rite of passage for our younger members halfway through the teenage years, it could become an excuse to start taking drugs, having sex, or using alcohol, and we all know our society doesn’t need any more of those . You might say “If our society had an official rite of passage, our young people might not feel the need to to start taking drugs, having sex, or using alcohol !” and I’m not so sure that’s true . Does our society really need a rite of passage ? What kind of a rite of passage could our society have ? Why can’t our society’s rite of passage be graduating high school or going to college ? Penn State Student Affairs Research and Assessment recently released its annual report on alcohol which randomly surveyed 1,174 Penn State students about their drinking habits in college. The results are similar to that of the survey's origin in 2008.
