Things I Like #7: Le Tour de France

July is my favourite month for one reason only. For three weeks, the world’s greatest sporting event takes place. I’ve been watching the Tour on telly for twenty years. I look forward to it like nothing else and usually fall into a depression when it’s over. In recent years, the race has been steeped in controversy, with drug abuse among the competitors bringing the spectacle publicity for all the wrong reasons.
Since superhuman Lance Armstrong retired, the race has become more intriguing than ever. There are about ten possible winners in this year’s field. British sprinter Mark Cavendish has already won two stages, but the race really starts today as the peloton enters the Pyrenees. When I was a kid, I dreamed of being ‘King of the Mountains’ like Robert Millar or Marco Pantani. You wouldn’t think cycle racers had discernible personalities (Alan Partridge once described the peloton as resembling a "herd of cattle… on bikes") but I love watching certain riders battling against all sorts of pain as they make lone (and doomed) breakaways. Against the backdrop of Southern France, the climbs up the mountains and the 70mph descents are awe-inspiring. I get almost as emotional watching the race as the riders taking part. Every year there are shrieks of joy and tears of despair, and that’s just in my front room!
I’ve chosen to illustrate my love of le Tour by uploading this photo of my crappy mountain bike, which was taken in complete darkness on the landing. Just the mobile phone flash was used to light the scene. The original had a grim yellow cast, so I’ve altered the colours considerably.
My bike actually only has one wheel, since I crashed it about seven years ago, after a passing motorist forced me into riding into a parked car. I broke my hand on the wing mirror, did a somersault and landed on my hip. I’ll probably never ride again.

Afghan drug addicts, who say they have recently returned from Iran where they lived as refugees, smoke opium behind a mud wall in Kabul, Afghanistan Sunday May 15, 2005. Afghanistan, the world’s largest producer of opium and heroin, on Sunday launched the first comprehensive survey of drug abuse among its own population. Surveyors will conduct 3,000 interviews of addicts and others and draw on data such as prison and hospital records to gauge a problem exacerbated by the return of refugees from neighboring Pakistan and Iran, the Ministry of Counternarcotics said.
