A few weeks ago I started buying the 250 ml bottles of coke instead of the 500ml with the expectation i would drink half as mutch. Instead I now just drink twice as many bottles so my consumption hasn’t gone down at all. Mix that with the all the red bull and things can get a little hazy.

Startled by this announcement, I felt I had to record it for those diaspora of the school who will be as taken aback as me. Times have changed – back then, most of the boys smoked, but kept it secret. Alcohol? I remember getting wasted after my "O-level" exam results came out, but apart from that we didn’t drink much – and never at school. Drugs, in the form of dynamite Kenya grass, began to make its appearance in my last year, but the staff remained in denial.

Substance abuse? As in abusing substances? "You snivelling piece of plastic! You’re a miserable excuse for a lump of PVC! What are you? What? Speak up, I can’t hear you!" Yeah, I can see how that would get right up your nose.

We had more fun in those days. Rum, sodomy and the lash, according to Churchill, even though he got the rum bit wrong.

At least the school uniform hasn’t changed, though it’s worn with a slovenliness that would have earned some grisly punishment back in the 60s.
