First of all, I am a big fan of GGD. I just love them.
After listening to their music over and over, I found some interesting things to look at.
To me, clearly he is describing the drug ecstasy use.
If you take a good look at the lyrics, it tells itself Rzeznik is singing about the amphetamine-like influence.
For example, from the song Big Machine, you can find phrases like,
– “swallow all your bitter pills (ecstasy, MDMA is usually administered by a tablet form, taken orally)”,
– “now your world is way too fast” ; clearly describing an amphetamine characteristic.
– “God, it’s good to be alive” ; describing an extreme euphoria, the characteristic of ecstasy use (by massive flooding of serotonin in the brain).
– “where you stop and I begin” ; describing “coming down” effect after the use.
– ” living like a house on fire” ; extreme rise of the body temperature during ecstasy experience (rapid heart beat, increased blood flow)
– “What you fear is your desire, It’s hard to deal, I still love the way you feel” ; psychological (not PHYSICAL) addiction. Very common among the users.
– “still in love with all your sins” ; feeling guilt of using the drug.
– John Rzeznik, the composer and the singer of the song Big Machine, had a father who had alcohol problem. The father died of alcohol complication at John’s age of 14. Genetically, it is possible to imagine John also show interest in “intoxicating” substance abuse.
– and finally, playing of the background electric guitar suggests the typical experience of the ecstasy use ; sudden rise of the euphoria, continuation of the heightened emotion, reaching the peak, then coming down effect, then stop.
The electric guitar is played just like the experience. It is clearly heard the rise, continuation (described by rising tone and intensity of the sound), pleatue, then sudden stop.
