Gasquet update: Should we believe him now?
Question by Ʈєŋ¡ςʄαη: Gasquet update: Should we believe him now?
Gasquet publicly spoke out about his positive test for cocaine for the first time recently. Here is an excerpt from his interview with L’Equipe.
“When I learned about it, I was still in Rome, the day after my defeat against [Fernando] Verdasco in the quarterfinals,” said Gasquet. In an official e-mail notification he saw the heading, ‘Miami, cocaine metabolite.’ I remember that word, ‘metabolite.’ I called my agent. I did not understand the English, there were these phrases everywhere — it was incomprehensible…I thought it was a new ATP list of products we cannot take. And he told me, ‘You tested positive for cocaine at Miami.’ ”
After the initial shock, Gasquet felt convinced that a mistake would be uncovered somewhere. “In fact, I had a big hope about the B sample, it was so unbelievable.” When it also came back positive, he underwent a hair test to prove he was not a habitual user and a DNA test to check if the urine sample was indeed his.
The Frenchman stated that he has “never, ever, ever, taken cocaine.” He indicated the trace amounts found in his system may have come from a party he attended shortly before being tested. “I saw a person who was at the party there, and they said they had been offered cocaine, that there was an enormous amount of cocaine there that evening. I did not see it. You can well imagine that if I had seen it, I would have left the club,” said Gasquet.
He is planning unspecified legal action, but even if he is banned for two years, he vows to return. “My motivation has never been stronger. I am 23 [he turns 23 later this month], the good times will come back,” he said. “I am innocent, and I can’t wait to start playing again. My career is far from finished.”
I don’t know about you, but he genuinely sounds like he is telling the truth. I am hoping that he is innocent and can return this year. Despite what he says, two years is an eternity in a tennis player’s career and this can destroy a career. What do you all think?

Even if it is true, banning him is beyond ridiculous. It is not a performance enhancing drug. What he does in his own personal time is not our concern. Sure, if law enforcement catch him with such drugs in his possession he should face the same penalties that any average person would, an average person wouldn’t lose their job over it.
What do you think? Answer below!

Yeah, I believe him , as does Nadal.

reasonable..
gasquet is not the only guy on drugs, federer is on as well. he seems to be very fit during illness, very suspicious if u ask me.
This would be a horribly stupid decision to ban Gasquet for two whole years. No matter how hard Gasquet would try after two years, it would be pretty difficult for him to make it back to the top of the game. Although even if he did take it he probably wouldn’t admit it that easily, he still sounds genuinely honest. Hopefully a few other things can be done to prove Gasquet’s innocence. What seems to be a good thing from this though is how he is talking about how he has never been more motivated. That motivation could ultimately take him to new places in his career, and we all know how much potential he has. Could this be a blessing in disguise?
Edit: James I agree completely, if Gasquet were guilty he would know well enough that it would be practically impossible to lie about it and then get away with it, so I really think he is telling the truth. Whatever happened at that damn party may have messed up his career!
I honestly think, that if he actually did it, he would be up front and honest about it, and make a statement about how sorry he is. There is no point of lying, because there is no way you could prove yourself innocent in this situation. So think Richard is telling the truth. Of course, that just may be the naive, childish side of me, that thinks there are no such thing as lies. But I am sticking by one of my all time favorite players here. I think if he were banned for 2 years, his career would be finished…So if he gets proven innocent he will come back and fight til he wins all the majors, haha.
