Has Hiphop/rap Had a More Negative or Positive Effect on African-American Community Since It’s Birth? Explain?
Joe asked:
On One side you have reflecting African-American struggle in a seemingly unfair society (NWA) , spreading a message to change society (Dead Prez), giving young men hope to succeed and escape the ghetto (Lupe), continuing a legacy of African-American music (Ragtime, Blues, Jazz), and creating jobs. On the other the foul language (Akinyele), promotion of drug and gun use (Cypress Hill), affiliation with gangs as a “cool” element (Snoop Dogg), disgusting view of women that infect African American society (50 Cent), and the promotion of anti-police and anti-peace violence (Ice Cube).

It has helped in the end.

It has serious negative effects on the black community, while making them feel like it has had positive effects. Yes, they are happy and feel moralized to see some of their people up on stage, but the bad far outweighs the good. The foul language, glorification of the ghetto and the glorification of gangs and violence and treating women like trash have tipped the scale in the other direction.

let me break it down for you like this most new rap is garbage if anything rap has had a positive effect most of the songs about gangs and violence reflect what is going on where we live i mean the reason i listen to more rap then rock is because i simply can’t relate to most of the rock songs but i can relate to rap not only does some rap have a positive message but it gives people other things to do so they wont go out and start doing or selling drugs

After NWA, it has had a negative affect. Yes NWA gave social commentary, but it also promoted a negative life style. With this, gangsta rap (“real hip-hop,” even though it started as party music in the basements of New York City’s teenagers) got popular, and now we have rappers rapping about drugs, guns, sex, exetra. Violents, drugs and sex turned into the winning combination for record sells. There are still positive rapper (Common just to name 1). On the flip-side, most of the popular rappers rap about the streets. Its getting a little better on its topics though. We see more party and love rap songs. The negative of that is that the rappers are less skilled and lack substance to his/her/there music.
EDIT: i also forgot, gangsta rap promoted the stop snitching craze. this lets murderers go free. i know if i had a murdered son, i would like it if the people cooperated with the police . some say, we will police our own neighborhood, but on the real, this almost never works out. well it will work out, if one is trying to get killed. what if one’s son was murdered by a gang member? this is not the movies, most likely going out for revenge will lead to one’s death or a trip to the butt house (jail).
lies
It was positive for the actual community itself but it is partially responsible for the negative images of African Americans in the media. Sure we weren’t on tv at all in the past, but it’s pretty suckish being represented by shi.t like BET. Aside from that, hip hop was an uplifting contribution to black people. Kinda helped to find us a louder voice.
